Interesting is that Cori died on January 29, 2005. It was a sudden death. She received a fine bill of health in December, and by January 29, she was having trouble holding her urine and eating. We took her to the vet, where they found her liver enzymes in the 2000s. (It was normal in December.) We authorized an exploratory surgery where they found her internal organs ravaged with cancer. We didn't let them wake her up. She had only days left and she was suffering as it was.
Hubby and I decided that we would start downsizing our brood. We had 5 dogs and didn't want any more dogs. Moreover, I am a rescuer, so if I were to get a puppy, it would be from a rescue. (We got Cori from a breeder, but that was before I became a rescuer.)
At about mid-February (about the time, Carrie Ann was conceived), I started having dreams ordering me to get a puppy. After a lot of fights with hubby, he agreed. Now, I had problem because basset puppies are hard to come by via rescues. I interviewed numerous breeders and liked this one breeder who was about 300 miles from my house. I was incredulous when she told me the that my puppy was born on Cori's birthday. Carrie Ann was the only puppy from the litter who came up to my lap and fell asleep. I felt like she chose me. She has so much of Cori's personality.
I don't believe in reincarnation or anything like that, but I feel that somehow Cori's spirit guided us to this breeder. For some reason, she had some unfinished business to complete.
When Cinnamon and Zack died, we never got another dog. We are now down to three.
That sounds a bit like how we came to have Bijou. After Dusty died, my mom was determined to get another of the same breed (he was a Silky Terrier). But silkies and yorkies cost too much money around our way, and we were still paying off the hospital bill.
Mom said she had told Dusty before we let him go that she wanted him to lead her to her next doggie, and that she'd know who it was when it was a girl, since we were opposed to female dogs. But then our neighbor's dog had a litter unexpectedly, and they were all girls and that's how we got Bijou.
