WASHINGTON -- Former Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards is admitting to an extramarital affair but denies fathering the woman's daughter.

Edwards tells ABC News that he lied repeatedly about the affair with a 42-year-old woman but says that he didn't love her. He says he has not taken a paternity test but knows he isn't the father because of the timing of the affair and the birth.

ABC says a former Edwards campaign staffer claims he is the father, not Edwards.

Edwards was a top contender for the Democratic nomination for president. He placed second in the Iowa caucuses last January but dropped out of the race a few weeks later.

Edwards, a former senator from North Carolina, was the Democratic nominee for vice president in 2004.

On the news tonight, they said he did say he'd be willing to take any tests necessary.

Meh...I'll believe it when I see it. It's one thing to say you'll do something and another to do it. If he's so certain that it's not his, he should've already taken a test because he has nothing to worry about.

Tell me about it! And why was he visiting the baby last month, if he doesn't think it's his?

Me thinks he may be guilty.

IAWTC X 100,000,000,000,000

He's acting really shady about this whole thing. And of course, drop the news during the Olympic opening ceremonies AND on a Friday, so no one notices, right? Pfft!

Did he drop the news or did it come out because of the Enquirer?

I think that he came out because he was caught. Come on, the affair happened 2 years ago. He was trying to save his butt.

The Enquirer broke the story. They sent around 10 reporters to the hotel where he was visiting the mistress and the baby (I kid you not - 10 reporters - they wanted to make sure everyone could verify it).

When he left the elevator and all the reporters were standing there asking questions, he ran upstairs and went into the first floor bathroom for 15 minutes or so and hid before having a security guard usher him out.

BTW - the Enquirer filed a lawsuit saying that a few reporters were roughed up by security. This means Edwards will have to testify/verify the incident, as will the security guards. I doubt Edwards would perjure himself at this point.

They really wanted to nail him on this one. I don't know who had it in for him, but they are really serious about proving this is true.

He only answered about the affair when there was so much chatter about it on the Internets/cable news, etc. and none of the big papers covered it. There has been some speculation, tho, that some of the reporters on the campaign trail new about it for a long time but kept it a secret to protect Elizabeth Edwards. I don't blame them for this. I can only imagine having to go through cancer treatments and have to deal with this at the same time. :(

OMG, I remember this story. I didn't realize that they were talking about him. I just heard that the reporters were following him. I didn't hear the name of the man pursued by the reporters.

Scum... How could you do this to your ailing wife. And, who knows how many more he had and was not found out.

Ten reporters? Holy crap! I hadn't heard all that, what a mess.

Yeah, and on top of visiting the baby, I saw pics where he was holding it! WTF? Now, the Enquirer isn't the most reliable rag in the world, but if they're running this they've done their homework and had about a million lawyers check this out. They don't want to get sued.

AND...supposedly they have bank records of him sending this woman $15,000 a month! $15,000 a month for a fling he supposedly didn't love? Uh, I don't think so!

Since when does the Enquirer give a rat's ass?

Maybe he felt guilty? But, yeah, it sounds like he was keeping a love nest or paying for the baby he claims isn't his.

I think they've been following this for a while...

There are a few things that bother me about this whole thing.

#1: He had this in the background and he still went forward, took the money from his donors, and ran for president.

#2 He seems to keep trying to frame it that his wife's cancer was in remission when he did it.

#3 You guys know my politics, but more than anything this is about hypocrisy. I think that anyone that stands up, regardless of political party, and pretends to be some sort of saint/bulletproof person has to pay the price for being a liar and a cheat. That includes Larry Craig, Bill Bennett, etc.

I didn't even really have a problem with Bill Clinton's affair, just the way he handled it. Could've been done better.

See, I'm not a partisan hack! XD

Let's face it, as long as men have an electable penis, as long as they are powerful and have money, and as long as there are women who don't give a rat's ass whose penis gets in them, we will have this type of scandal.

Oh, yeah, this has nothing to do with partisanship. I'm a Dem and don't condone this at all. But, yeah, fooling around while running for Pres? So stupid. Gary Hart, anyone?

It doesn't matter if his wife was in remission or not. But the fact that she had been going through what she was just makes it that much worse.

Amen!

I loved Bill Clinton and was crushed to learn he had an affair. I was so angry with him for a long time.

How sad and/or hilarious that the boat that Gary Hart was caught on was called "Monkey Business"?

I swear, you can't make this shit up.

The people I feel most for (I am not a big fan of Elizabeth Edwards, but i do feel for her too - it must be terrible to be her), are the donors. The people who actually sent in money and believed in this man. I'm sure they were sad enough that he didn't make it to president, but he at least had a shot at the VP nomination. Now, thanks to this ridiculousness, he's as dead as fried chicken. And all that money from the donors just went down the drain.

I don't think so. She could publish a book and talk about what a lover he was and how he told her that he thought his wife was homey and would die soon and he would take this woman with him. Blah, bllah.
