More on the Train Accident

GAITHERSBURG CITY, Md (WUSA) -- A vehicle operated by an elderly couple attempted to go over a rail road track at Chestnut Avenue when when it collided with a northbound Marc train that was unable able to stop. For unknown reasons, the driver of the vehicle stopped as the gate was coming down.

There were two minor injuries. One individual was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The police and fire departments promptly responded to the accident removing the vehicle from the scene allowing train service to resume shortly after.

For unknown reasons, the driver of the vehicle stopped as the gate was coming down.
By the looks of the video, they seem to have stopped before the tracks so I'm confused. If they stopped as the gate was coming down, they should be safe, no?

The car was either thrusted backwards or it was moved to make sure everyone was safe. The car's front was on the track when it was hit.
