Here's a great article that snivellusfriend of the Michael Emerson Fan Board found....

If you happened to catch any productions of the Alabama Shakespeare Festival in 1994 or 1995, there's a good chance you saw Michael Emerson live and in person.

A 53-year-old native of Iowa, Emerson at a key point in his acting career found out about the prestigious Master of Fine Arts degree offered through onstage work at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival in Montgomery. The two-year program is affiliated with the University of Alabama.

According to Meg Lewis, public relations manager of ASF, Emerson graduated with the MFA class of 1995. While pursuing his degree, Emerson played many memorable roles such as Ferdinand in The Tempest, Lady Wishfort in The Way of the World and Rosencrantz in Hamlet.

By happy coincidence, in that latter role he also met his future wife, Carey Preston, who portrayed Ophelia.
Emerson also had parts in productions of All's Well That Ends Well, Henry IV Part I, A Christmas Carol and The Crucible, Lewis said.

He returned to ASF the season after graduating to perform in a children's production called Androcles and the Lion.
