EXCLUSIVE: I GOT SO FAMOUS I NEARLY LOST IT
EXCLUSIVE £40K-A-SHOW EVANGELINE ON HITTING ROCK BOTTOM
By Lara Gould, Tv Reporter
AS female lead of cult castaway drama Lost, Evangeline Lilly showed all the signs of being a massive star in the making.
But behind the scenes, the former model's meteoric rise to fame was driving her to the brink of a breakdown.
The pressures were so great she nearly quit her £40,000-an-episode role as fugitive Kate Austen after hitting rock - bottom in a New York hotel two years ago.
The Canadian-born star, 27, reveals how she feared she was losing her mind | and finally poured her heart out to her parents in a desperate call home.
She says: "I called my parents and said, 'I don't know what's wrong. I don't know if I can keep going in this industry'. I just wanted to get away from it all. I never wanted to be a big film star. I just wanted the comfort of having a job I love."
Evangeline, back on screen as ' Kate tonight in the third series of Lost, says the pressure to maintain the perfect Hollywood J figure added to her worries.
She tells how she made herself ill with dieting and three-hour, workouts to keep to a Size 8.
"The pressure to stay thin is enough to make you go insane," she adds. "I was overworked and undernourished."
In an interview with America's Self magazine, she reveals how she "found herself again after a month of charity work in Africa. She finally beat her demons with her own personal mantra - "I am what I am" - and repeating it 20 times a day. "I know it's cheesy, but it reminds me if people don't like who I am, that's OK."
Evangeline's troubles had coincided with the break-up of her marriage to her childhood sweetheart Murray Hone. But the blow was softened when she found love with her Lost co-star Dominic Monaghan, 29, who plays rock hasbeen Charlie Pace in the show - poached from Channel 4 by Sky One for the third series. The couple, who live together near the Lost set in Hawaii, are said to be marrying next summer. "Now I feel more settled," she says. "I want to do Lost for a while and hopefully some movies in between. Ideally, I'd like to be a writer and a mother. But who knows?"
