It is sad because he put up such a good fight, but in the end, it wasn't enough. I really don't think he was put down for any other reason than there was simply no other way. Those vets and his owners bent over backwards 50 ways from Sunday to save this horse. It really was a departure from standard practices to go this far and this long.

I agree with you. I think the owners and the vets did everything that they could to save him. It's just that it is sad that he fought so bravely, only to lose it for something else. It was just so sad.

And I've read that veterinary medicine has gained a great deal of insight from the effort they put into caring for Barbaro, so even this ending doesn't mean it was all for nothing. How many horses who come after him will benefit from what veterinarians learned from this case?

Oh, I think Barbaro will go down in the Annals of Veterinary Science.
