It seems Kevin Durand had to get Lost to breakthrough Hollywood’s doors.

The 34-year-old Thunder Bay-born and raised actor enjoyed an eight-episode stint on the fourth season of the

Kevin Durand

Actor Kevin Durand came home to Thunder Bay for a visit after completeing three new projects
wildly popular ABC show playing hired mercenary Martin Keamy.

The role has expanded Durand’s audience and fan base and he said the experience has really been incredible.

“I play a lot of characters that are very different than who I am and to actually play a character that looks more like me – I’m not putting on a limp or prosthetics – so people really kind of know Keamy from Lost when I walk down the street. It’s opened up a lot of doors,” he said.

The actor, who’s had a long line-up of roles as a villain (mostly due to his 6 ft. 6 inch frame), felt honoured to be part of the enigmatic show with it’s strong scripts, tight crew and talented cast. And working on a program with such a tight lid on its secrets is a thrilling ride.

“You really don’t know what’s going to happen in the next episode and you get the scripts pretty late, so it is pretty secretive and it’s kind of exciting that way. You’re really forced to get in the moment and say the words and play the guy,” said Durand.

While Lost is filmed in Honolulu, Hawaii, Durand was bouncing back and forth over the last seven months between the Aloha State, Sydney, Australia and New Mexico working on three separate projects.

He spent time in the land down under working on the next installment of the X-Men movies: Wolverine, where he plays alongside Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds as the villainous mutant The Blob also known as Frederick J. Dukes, a perennial X-Men character. The film is set for theatrical release in spring 2009.

“I wasn’t a comic book kid because I was busy playing hockey here in Thunder Bay. That’s all I wanted to do and all I dreamed of really. But when I saw the first (X-Men film), I was just in awe and the second one (X2:X-Men United) just blew me away,” he said.

When he heard the news a new installment was in the works, he was hoping the producers would consider him for a part and luckily for Durand, they already knew his name and called for him to take a look at the part.

And to get the larger than life Blob ready for the cameras, it took six months of costume and special effects preparation.

“I have a feeling people are going to like him,” Durand said.

His New Mexico project is the film Legion, slated for release in fall 2009. The film centres around the after effects of a biblical apocalypse and Durand plays the archangel Gabriel in a cast chalk full of famous names from Dennis Quaid to Paul Bettany and Kate Walsh of Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice fame.

With these last two projects now in post-production, Durand said he’s happy to be able to just take a breath and come back home for a rest.

“(I’m) kind of waiting for something to excite me before I jump on board any other ships,” he said.

And while his Lost character was seemingly killed off in this season’s finale, Durand said he wouldn’t be surprised if audiences saw Keamy again next season.

“The guy just doesn’t want to die,” he said.
