It was a beautiful evening, with a full moon radiating down on Earth. Not a cloud was up on the sky to threaten rain. You could hear the roar of the waves off the shore and a warm misty breeze was emanating from the south. It was a beautiful evening to walk around the shore holding hands with your loved one. But not for him. Tonight, by contrast, it was a sad evening, a dark evening–an evening where he’d like to pull his heart out of his chest because it was aching him so. Tonight, his lovely wife, his Colleen, would be sent off to her last journey.
He was wearing the required mourning robe: White pants, white pull-over shirt. This was the night that he would say his final good-bye. Ben, his best friend from childhood would officiate the ceremony. Even though he was married to Colleen for over 12 years, to Danny, she would always be his bride.
Thinking about her just created more desperation in his heart: His bride, his wife, his life partner, the one and only who understood him, was gone forever. She was the one who understood him the best. Not even his best friend was able to know the deep secrets and desires that this lovely woman was privy to. She was gone but a day and he missed her so!
He wanted to kill those plane-crash survivors. Ever since they appeared on the island, there has been no peace. They had no rights to be in his land. They were disturbing the ecological well being. He wanted them out of the island from the get go. It was Ben who chose to have peaceful means to deal with the pesky matter. Look what it got them: Goodwin, Ethan, and now Colleen were dead. Revenge was building in Danny’s heart. He wanted to make sure that once Colleen was on her journey, the survivors would have hell to pay. Of course, Danny knew that he had to restrain his killer mood. After all, Ben’s safety was at stake.
Life has not been easy lately. He knew that even his best friend might be taken from him. His friend was so ill, and yet, did not show it to the world. They both knew that if Ben were to succumb to his illness, there would be no peace among their people. You could feel the tension. And Danny was tense. He wanted to kill the survivors and, more than anything else, he wanted to kill Juliet.
Juliet was the mastermind of the uprising against Ben. Danny warned Ben not to allow this outsider join the cause. Ben argued that the group needed new blood. ‘New blood, my arse,’ Danny thought when Ben introduced the notion. Danny knew one thing that Ben didn’t know: Outsiders do not understand the group’s way. They don’t understand the need to blindly follow the leader. They are wrapped up in free will. They don’t understand that free will doesn’t exist. Only free knuckles, free punches. And, oh, Danny wanted to punch. He wanted to punch Sawyer’s head senseless. HOW DARE THEY KILL COLLEEN! Colleen did nothing to deserve this. HOW DARE THEY!
Danny wouldn’t cry, couldn’t cry. Anger was boiling inside him. Ben was the only one who was able to somewhat restrain him. Ben and Danny have always been friends. Their parents were friends, and Ben and Danny grew up together. Up until he met Colleen, Ben was the moon and the sky for Danny. As they were growing up, however, Ben’s thought processes was constantly changing. Ben became more interested in talking out conflicts. Danny preferred to punch it out. Danny hit, shot, punched, choked, etc. first and then asked questions. Ben liked to play mind games. Ben was like a cat. He played with his victims. Danny was like a bear: He conquered and killed. All the same, Ben needed Danny for defense and order, and Danny needed Ben for restrain.
The ceremony was about to begin. The music started. The woman was singing the funeral march. Once again, his thoughts gravitated towards Colleen. There she was on her journey boat. She was dressed in white; her clothing was drenched in lighter fluid. She was going to float into the ocean while being incinerated. Today’s funeral was not like the olden days when the bodies were offered to the bears. Ben stopped that custom. Juliet made sure of that. After the survivors will be gone, Danny made a mental note to get rid of Juliet. Ben was barking up the wrong tree. This woman did not like him. She wanted to destroy him. Danny had no patience. He wanted to kill her. But he couldn’t kill her, for she and the doctor held the key to Ben’s life, as they held the key to Colleen’s death.
Ben was approaching. It was time to start the ceremony. Danny refrained himself. He said good-bye the woman he loved. He owed her that much. And after the funeral, there will be plenty of time for revenge. For revenge was eating his heart out.
