Hate Hackers

I had to disable the settings for comments in the Michael Emerson Photo Gallery. Why? Because of hackers. The gallery has been inundated with comments with links to porno sites. Some porno sites were extremely offensive: child porno.

Grrrrr......................

That's too bad.
I completely understand how you feel.
We're having a similar problem on the terryoquinn.org gallery. So far there haven't been any porn links but there have been spam comments. We also seem to get at least two or three new users needing approval every day and from the user names more likely than not they are spammers. (We had to ban and delete a number of them already.)

I wonder how spammers find out about sites like photo galleries.
I don't want to have to do it but I may look into disabling comments. Right now we're only approving people whose user names we recognize.

There is a way of installing an intelligent catcher. Coppermine has Coppermine Capcha v3.0 that supposedly catches hackers and spammers. I am waiting for my son to install it.

Is there a way to set the gallery to not allow people to register, but to allow us to still sign up people if we know them?

I don't think so. You could pose that question at the coppermine board:

I was about to leave a similar comment. Not sure we need to close off comments, as long as we don't approve anyone we don't know. Of course, I'm not sure if you have to be registerd to leave comments.

You can comment anonymously. There is a way of stopping that type of comments, however.

The sad thing is, it's probably a bot...

You are correct.

I'm wondering the exact same thing.
Today there were four new members waiting for activation. The usernames were all random combinations of letters so I'm betting anything they were spammers or bots.

I did have someone who was not a spammer. So I can't really deny people the way you do. Most people were not leaving comments anyway. *sigh*

[identity profile] spicedogs.livejournal.com 2008-01-10 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately, they are out there and there's nothing that we can do about it.
