Crave talks to Yunjin Kim of Lost.
We have seen Sun and Jin for a while on Lost. They had their one flashback episode but most of this season’s first six episodes were all about Kate, Sawyer, Jack and the Others. Lost producers promise to go back to the beach when the show resumes in February, but we couldn’t wait, so we talked to Yunjin Kim to tide us over. Always more glamorous than the torn and tattered island survivor she plays, Kim charmed us with vague tidbits about the mystery pregnancy and the cast reunion.
Crave Online: Are you expecting to get a prosthetic belly at some point?
Yunjin Kim: I believe so. But I think that's going to be like season four. Because as far as time and days, we're only 90 days. I think, 95.
Crave Online: Are you keeping track of that, or are they telling you periodically where you are?
Yunjin Kim: They tell us. Yeah. Once in a while, they'll have, like, in the line "We've been here for 95 days," just to remind people that we haven't been here for three years or something, yeah.
Crave Online: When is Sun due?
Yunjin Kim: I have no idea. Probably season ten. If we keep on going this way, unless they skip to six months later and then you just, bam.
Crave Online: Were you aware going into the character that you had had an affair in the past?
Yunjin Kim: No, I had no idea. I mean, I knew that Sun's just been advertised to be just too perfect. So, I knew something was behind her. And it was really exciting to sort of have a little bit of action, and to see that she's got tons of dark sides, and that she's a pathological liar. You know, to begin with. Especially to her husband.
Crave Online: Is that how you feel about her?
Yunjin Kim: Yeah. I mean, because every other episode, you see her pulling out another lie. It's like, "Oh, I forgot to tell you this."
Crave Online: Do you have any more flashbacks coming up?
Yunjin Kim: Yeah, we have one more coming up. We haven't gotten a script, but I hear that it's really juicy.
Crave Online: You guys are also some of the characters that have had a lot of flashbacks. How much more do you think there is to work in that past?
Yunjin Kim: I don't know. But for Sun and Jin, we always combine one flashback. So, it's always good, because we don't get tired of it. If it was just me, mine, and then his, mine, and his, I think it would be a little less interesting. But since we combine it, we'll see his side, my side. So, I think it's more interesting because of that.
Crave Online: Are you in the next episode to air?
Yunjin Kim: Uh-huh. Finally, yeah.
Crave Online: Who in the cast would you like more scenes with, which you haven't really gotten your share of working with?
Yunjin Kim: Terry O'Quinn., my favorite actor on the show, favorite guy on the show. I love them all. But, I mean, I think Terry brings something very special to the show. And I just like him. I just like being around him. He's a cool guy.
Crave Online: Do you say anything to the writers about whether they're bringing in more of the characters, like enough already?
Yunjin Kim: No. No. No. I mean, I think it's good. I think we need fresh blood. We need new people, just to shake us up. And I think they've been a great addition, especially the Others. And the Tailies were great to have. You know, it just brings out, the story opens up a lot more with new characters coming in versus just us.
Crave Online: Can you tell us about any of the drama that's going on your side of the island while Jack, Kate and Sawyer were away?
Yunjin Kim: Oh, you mean storyline?
Crave Online: Yes. Is it something as intense as what the three are going through?
Yunjin Kim: Yeah, it's pretty intense but they do come back. That's all I can say. And then we go back.
Crave Online: All of them?
Yunjin Kim: They come back, and then we go back, and they come back. Yeah. Because it's always been, like, "Hey, I know you. How's your show going?" You know, to, like, Matthew Fox. I haven't seen him for six months. "Hey, your show's going great. Mine is going, too."
Crave Online: You speak Korean, but is the accented English hard for you?
Yunjin Kim: What I do, this is, like, a method I figured out. I write out my English lines in Korean and I memorize it in Korean, versus in English.
Crave Online: You’re translating your English lines?
Yunjin Kim: Yeah. Yeah, yeah. And writing it out, like writing out English lines in Korean phonetic. That's what I mean. Like, "Are you going to the bathroom?" And, like, how would I write "are you going to the bathroom," in Korean. So it's just easier to memorize.
Crave Online: Do you watch it live, to see the translations? Because they're not always really 100 percent accurate. They're close.
Yunjin Kim: Well, we get scripts, and we get translated lines. But we would like it to be more conversational, what a real Korean person would say. And so we would change a lot of it on set, or beforehand. You know, I call up Daniel, and say, “Hey, do you want to change this line to this?" So, he'll have time to practice. And then he'll be like, "No, no, no. You know what? Let's just change to this," which would change my line. And so we've got that set, and we've been doing that for three years. We don't ever change the meaning of the lines, of course. Sometimes in rehearsal, we'll just, like, talk sh*t. And we'll curse in Korean. And I'm like, "Okay, great." We'll do it like that. You know. We're the ones cracking up. Ha ha. But, yeah. We would tell them, “No, don't use that shot, that take. That was just me cursing out.”
Crave Online: What's your favorite 'Lost' theory?
Yunjin Kim: The fact that it's all in Libby, remember Cynthia Watros' character? It's in her head. I like that. Because she was in a mental institution. And, you know. It's kind of cool, because she got killed off.
Crave Online: What's your theory?
Yunjin Kim: You know, I gave up on having a theory. You know, I thought, this has got to be a scientific experiment. And now we know so much more about the Others, I don't think so. I don't think that's the case. But I'm sure this is what JJ and Damon and
Crave Online: So they change it midstream?
Yunjin Kim: Yeah. I mean, I think they know their destination, as far as how they're gonna get there. Whether they take the 101 or the 405, it's up to you. But the destination is always gonna be
Crave Online: They say an end is in sight. How do you feel about that?
Yunjin Kim: Great. Damon talked about us having four seasons, and then topping it off with a movie. That sounds like a great idea, for me.
Crave Online: You weren't planning on lifetime employment?
Yunjin Kim: I just want to make sure that I get a kiss scene with Sawyer.
Crave Online: Does it suck or is it cool when you’re not even working for several episodes?
Yunjin Kim: You know what? All I have to say is we're in
Crave Online: What do you do? What do you do on weeks off?
Yunjin Kim: I mean, you know, I live there. I bought a condo. I mean, it's just what I would do every day if I was just at home not working. So, a lot of good things.
Crave Online: Do you go to the gym a lot to keep in shape?
Yunjin Kim: You know, I swim a lot, certainly because I'm in
Crave Online: Do you think you'll still live there after the show?
Yunjin Kim: I don't know. I don't think so, at this point because I'm a New Yorker. I'm from
Crave Online: Have you been back to
Yunjin Kim: Yeah. I go there quite often for commercials and things like that. I did go back, and they love the show. They love the fact that there are two Koreans.
Crave Online: Where are they up to in airing? Are they equal with us?
Yunjin Kim: Pretty much. I mean, I think they're just ending with season two. They're just about to start with season three.
