My not-so-humble opinion
As I am posting my thoughts, it is 10:30 AM, Wednesday November 1. Tonight the 5th episode of Season 3 of LOST will air. I am dreading this episode because...
one of the main characters will die. I am so sick and tired of losing established characters. I have invested emotionally on a number of them, and I don't want them to go.
Many characters needed to leave in order to make room for new ones. Now they just added Rodrigo Sartoro and Nikki Sanchez to the pot. They should never have been added. They should be the ones to go. Let them go without a flashback. Like Ardtz was let go. I don't like these characters, and I don't want to invest my emotions on them.
It is obvious that Rodrigo was brought to the show to enlarge the Brazilian audience. LOST does not need to do that. Brazilians will watch the show anyway.
In fact, now that LOST is showing in
There is no need for fresh blood. The show is doing fine as it is. There are plenty of stories to be told. Where is Danielle’s back story. How about adding more Hurley story. Where are Rose and Bernard? Surely, there is more story to be told about Claire. How did Kate spend so many years hiding? What made her go to
I don't want any of our established characters to die simply to give these two new characters space. I am sick and tired of investing emotionally on LOST characters, only to have them die because new characters are introduced. So either get rid of Paulo and Nikki, or keep them, but don’t kill off anymore characters.
Boone, in my opinion, was not needed to be sacrificed to the island.
Now, I don't want to be a hypocrite. I do adore a new character who was introduced in Season 2: HenryGale/Benjamin Linus, also known as Benry. But that character was not supposed to have lasted longer than 3 episodes. It was Michael Emerson's acting ability that made Benry a permanent character. The audience loved him, and he stayed. I have no problems with such addition. However, I hear rumors that Benry may die. Why kill off a good thing going? Maybe LOST is jumping the shark.
Moreover, LOST has established something that no other shows have done previously: They were not afraid of killing off main characters. However, do it enough, and you may lose your fan base.
That's just my not-so-humble opinion.

They don't need anymore Braziliand to watch the show. The ones who will watch it were already hooked long before Rodrigo was on the show. I doubt that many more people will start watching because of him. And the third season will air here only in March on cable TV. On open TV not even the second season has been on.
They're overdoing the "we are not scared of killing off important characters because we can". As you so properly said, it is getting ridiculous, and I'm sure more than a few people will lose interest on the show.

Here we have a character who is -incredibly- deep, with so much potential, and they kill him off. There was just so much possibility for him... and I really don't feel compelled to watch the show anymore. I'm so disenchanted with the direction things have gone, and what seems more and more to be very poor writing, that I'm bitterly throwing my hat in the ring. :(
(It also seems INCREDIBLY transparent that they keep offing characters who've gotten traffic tickets)
RIP Eko.

Harold Perrineau had his share of tickets as well.

Shannon was killed because the girl was doing more movies and wanted off the show. her choice not the writer's.
Ana Lucia was killed because they had ALWAYS decided she would only be on for season 2, not because of a DUI. again her choice when she signed on not the writer's.
Now for the killings. They are doing it to shake things up. Remember they are listening to viewers which is why we get 6 eps and then a hiatus. They changed a few things last season because they read these boards and see what the fans say.
Maybe you don't agree with it but it does keep it exciting.
As for Danielle, I want to know where the hell that woman is!

You really believe that line? Maggie Grace made only one movie in 2005 (The Fog). She did make 2 movies for 2007. But come on, she was not making more movies.
What about Cynthia? What was her excuse. How about Harold Perrineau? He was not killed, but he is gone.

Viewers wanted Eko dead?
Eh. It's not exciting for me. If it were, I'd want to watch. As it is, the last few weeks I've almost forgotten it's on, and tonight made me so angry I'm pretty much inspired -not- to watch. I just don't find it "exciting" to see a show floundering around without much direction (see Penny-Arcade's current strip, which pretty well sums up my feelings on it). I've heard a -lot- more people being turned off on the show with this season than being hooked or even just retained.

Besides who said death was forever? Boone made an appearance this year and last.

I didn't know that the actor who plays Eko was arrested. I wonder if it did have something to do with that.

Michele and Cynthia-drunken driving
Adewale-disobeying a police officer and driving without a license
Numerous other actors did get traffic tickets, but none were arrested.
